What You Should Know About Facebook Messenger’s One-Time Notification (OTN)

One-time Notification allows a Page to get a message opt-in from a person to send a follow-up message after the 24-hour messaging window has ended.

This powerful new tool allows you to broadcast timely follow-up messages outside the 24-hour window.

Few Things You Need To Know About Facebook OTN

Permission is not automatic

Page owners interested in using this API on their pages need to apply for the “One-Time Notification” permission within the “Advanced Messaging” section of Page Settings. The page will need to agree to the beta terms and will be granted the permission if the page meets our criteria.

How to get permission to use it?

This is as simple as clicking ‘Confirm’ and you will have received permission, so you’ll be able to do this in under a minute. Just go to your Facebook Page’s Settings -> Advanced Messaging -> Requested Features -> One Time Notification

Usage of OTN

Here is the recommended usage of OTN by Messenger

  • Don’t confuse, deceive, defraud, mislead, spam or surprise anyone. Make sure that there is a clear and obvious relationship between the prompt and the content of the message. The content of the one-time notification request and the message must comply with community standards.
  • Don’t use notifications as an incentive. Don’t promise users money, or equivalent to sign up for messages.
  • Pages that receive high volumes of negative user feedback or that confuse, deceive, defraud, mislead, or negatively surprise users will lose access to the API.

What Can You Use It for?

Common uses of the API include various promotional and non-promotional use cases where the User explicitly requested a follow-up. Examples include:

  • Back in stock alerts
  • Store-reopening
  • Collection launches
  • Concert tickets going on sale
  • Upcoming event notification and reminder
  • Price drop alerts
  • Event/programme tickets available for purchase
  • Customer satisfaction surveys
  • Confirmed event notifications
  • Purchase and account updates
  • Subscription updates by news organizations
  • Sponsored message ads

How to follow up after the one-time notification?

This new feature allows you to send people that opted in one message. There should be a clear relationship between the initial opt-in and the notification itself. When people engage with the notification, you can add a flow with a request to send another one-time notification.

This way, you can create rolling consent to send messages outside the 24-hour Standard Messaging window. Like subscription messaging, but on a clear opt-in basis!

It is very important you implement this amazing feature with your Facebook page. If you don’t want to do it by yourself, we are here to help.
